Helping women feel safe, confident and comfortable in the water
UAA’s women-only swimming sessions began because many African women told us they wanted to learn to swim but felt held back by fear, lack of previous opportunity, body confidence and discomfort in mixed-gender environments.
The sessions create a supportive space where beginners can learn gradually, women can exercise without feeling judged, and friendships grow naturally around a shared goal.
IMPACT More than 400 women have learned to swim through UAA’s sessions over the life of the programme. UAA records that around 98% of participants are unable to swim when they first start. Confirm the latest figures before publishing. |
Tamra told UAA that swimming helps with the joint pain she experiences in everyday life, with the benefit continuing in the days after a session.
Jackie began as a complete beginner and now goes swimming with her husband and child.
Juliet became confident enough to take out additional membership, swim with her children and get into the pool with them when the family is on holiday.
Trish first joined as a swimmer herself. When UAA temporarily lost its instructor, she stepped forward to help beginners, sharing tips and encouragement and helping women gain the confidence to swim without a float.
Tuesdays, 10:45am-11:45am at The Mounts Baths, Northampton; participant contribution £3.50. |
